Is Watermark Community Church a Cult?

Is Watermark Community Church a Cult? I answered this question on this week’s episode of Real Truth. Real Quick

Shownotes:

Principles:
1. When someone asks a question, it is always good for us to be clear on what is being asked.
2. If something is true, no amount of scrutiny will affect it.
3. If we are truly following Jesus Christ, our lives should look extreme to the world around us.
4. Many churches today talk about Jesus, but do not live in such a way that is radically different from the world around them.

Typically in a human cult you will see:
1. A human leader trying to grab for power.
2. Members being exploited sexually.
3. A leader draining members financially to live an exorbitant lifestyle.

Verses:
“He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in
righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of
regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,” Titus 3:5

“…for apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

“It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom
I am foremost of all.” 1 Timothy 1:15

“…He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say,
‘Show us the Father’?” John 14:9

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one
comes to the Father but through Me.” John 14:6

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” John 1:1-2

“…but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being
made in the likeness of men. Philippians 2:7

…He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,
even death on a cross.” Philippians 2:8

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we
might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

“Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your
sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they
are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.” Isaiah 1:18

“Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take
refuge in Him.” Proverbs 30:5

“For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are of sound mind,
it is for you.” 2 Corinthians 5:13

“Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from
fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.” 1 Peter 2:11

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Matthew 5:9

“or the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one
died for all, therefore all died;” 2 Corinthians 5:14

“Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” 1 Corinthians 15:33

“He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion
of fools will suffer harm.” Proverbs 13:20

How Much of Your Life Do You Share on Social Media?

How Much of Your Life Do You Share on Social Media? I answered that question on this episode of Real Truth. Real Quick.

Show Notes:

Principles:
  1. Something that thinks about itself all the time is usually a sign of something that is injured or broken.
  2. If we are having our needs met by a sovereign, loving, and all-sufficient Lord, we should not require constant attention from others.
  3. If the purpose of what you are doing is to draw attention to yourself and not to the Lord, there is probably a problem.
  4. If you are doing something online that is unwholesome, you can be sure it is not a good idea.
  5. If what you are doing is not for the good of others, but rather is self-advancing, it is not a worthy post.
  6. Invite feedback from others close to you who are willing to speak truth in love, and not just those who benefit from your post.
  7. We often regret the things we say more than the things we don’t say.
  8. Social media is a great medium for sharing the gospel, but don’t attract more attention to yourself than the gospel message.
Scripture: “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 “I say to you, among those born of women there is no one  greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” Luke 7:28 “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30 “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” Colossians 3:17 “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all  to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth,…” Ephesians 4:29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29 “Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips”. (Proverbs 27:2) “… clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5 “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time,” 1 Peter 5:6 “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5 Other Resources: What Does It Mean to Have Your Life Hidden With Christ in God? How Do I Talk to My Kids About Sex?

How Do I Talk to My Kids About Sex? I answered that question on this week’s episode of Real Truth. Real Quick.

Show Notes:

God created and gave us the gift of sex, and we should not be ashamed to talk about it. Using God-given things in a God forbidden way leads to sadness and destruction. Principles: 1. Do not over-answer the question your child asks 2. Do not be afraid to use anatomically correct terms in conversation. 3. You want to create a safe and God-honoring place for your kids to ask their questions about sex. 4. God in His kindness allows us to participate with Him in the creation of people made in His image through the gift of sex. 5. The goal is not just sexual purity, but purity in relationship with God. 6. Tell your kids to seek Jesus, not a spouse. Seeking Him produces purity as a by-product. Seeking purity without Him produces guilt and shame. 7. One of the worst things we can do in talking to our kids about sex is to try to protect them from the dangers by saying sex is a dirty thing. 8. Don’t talk poorly about God’s gifts. Tell the truth about Satan and his schemes. Scripture: “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” Psalm 84:11 “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.” 1 Timothy 4:4-5 “The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.” 1 Corinthians 7:4 “You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” Psalm 16:11 Summary: 1. Don’t over-answer the question. 2. Answer to the level of your child’s curiosity and age. 3. Give God glory. That gives your child the greatest sense of peace and sets them up for the greatest success. Other Resources: RTRQ: What Should I Do If I Find Myself in a Sexless Marriage? What Are Three Questions Good Friends Should Always Ask?

What Are Three Questions Good Friends Should Always Ask? I answer that question on this week’s episode of Real Truth. Real Quick.

Show Notes:

Principles:
  1. Good friends ask questions to help you grow, improve, and experience the life God wants you to have.
  2. If you want to make a change, then you need to change your playmates and your playground.
  3. Good friends live authentically with each other.
  4. Good friends admonish each other faithfully.
Questions: How are you feeding your soul? How are you feeding your flesh? How are you feeding others? Scripture: “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:2-3 “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it…” Joshua 1:8 “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Proverbs 13:20 “But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” Hebrews 3:13 “For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.” Galatians 5:17 “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” Philippians 4:8 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” James 5:16 “…but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” James 5:16 “He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.” Proverbs 28:13 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;” 1 Peter 2:9 “…but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;” 1 Peter 3:15 “Like apples of gold in settings of silver Is a word spoken in right circumstances.” Proverbs 25:11 “Let the righteous smite me in kindness and reprove me; It is oil upon the head…” Psalm 141:5 “Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.” Proverbs 27:6 “…and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds…” Hebrews 10:24 Other Resources: What Does It Mean to Be a Fully Devoted Follower of Christ? Why Should Christians Serve?

Why Should Christian Serve? I answer that question on this week’s episode of Real Truth. Real Quick.

Show Notes:

Principles:
  1. Our service doesn’t save us.
  2. Christians suffer and serve others for others’ good as a way to show God’s care for the world.
  3. Christians serve to build up the body of Christ.
  4. Christians serve to further the gospel.
  5. Christians serve as they are conformed to the image of Christ.
  6. Christians serve because they love God, and it is a privilege to live for Him and His Kingdom because He died for them.
Scripture: “For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;” Romans 8:29 “…just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28 “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10 “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” 1 Peter 4:10 “But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 Corinthians 12:7 “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;” Ephesians 4:11-12 “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.” Colossians 1:24 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 Other Resources:

What Makes a Good Testimony?

What Makes a Good Testimony? I answer that question on this week’s episode of Real Truth. Real Quick.

Show Notes:

Principles:

  1. A good testimony is one that is true.
  2. The most powerful testimony you have is the testimony of your life.
  3. A good testimony glorifies Jesus, not your sin.
  4. A good testimony describes the new life you have in Christ.
  5. A good testimony doesn’t deny or celebrate past sin.
  6. A good testimony makes the Gospel clear.
  7. A good testimony makes Jesus the hero and makes it clear that He saved you from an old way of life for a new life with Him.
  8. Some of the most powerful testimonies are of people that have walked in grace their entire lives.
  9. A good testimony is true, Christ-exalting, and shared.
